NEW DATA CONFIRMS DOCTORS FEAR: MAJORITY OF AMERICANS AVOIDING TREATMENT FOR HEART ATTACK AND STROKE DUE TO COVID-19

As states begin to re-open, 40 percent of Americans still view going to the hospital as a risky behavior – even more than going to the hair salon, a concert or the beach, according to a new national survey released today by the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Intervention (SCAI). The survey findings confirm a growing concern among doctors and hospitals: people are more afraid of contracting COVID-19 than seeking care for serious medical emergencies like a heart attack or stroke.

Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions Bestows Highest Designation Ranking to Leading Interventional Cardiologists

The Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) presented its Master Interventionalists of SCAI (MSCAI) designations during the SCAI 2020 Scientific Sessions Virtual Conference MSCAI recognition ceremony.

Cindy Grines, MD, MSCAI, Assumes Office as SCAI 2020-21 President

Cindy Grines, MD, MSCAI, a world-renowned physician credited for pioneering percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for heart attacks, has assumed the office of president of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI). Grines’ tenure as president officially begins Saturday, May 16, during the SCAI 2020 Scientific Sessions Virtual Conference. Grines is the third female interventionalist to lead the Society.

“Pivotal” Trial Results Display Favorable Outcomes for Use of Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve Device

A percutaneous transcatheter therapy for congenital heart disease (CHD) patients with severe pulmonary regurgitation (PR) has been slow to materialize, in comparison to transcatheter pulmonary valve (TPV) therapy for a dysfunctional surgical RV-PA conduit which was first implanted twenty years ago as the Melody TPV. Findings from the Medtronic Harmony TPV Pivotal Trial were presented today during the SCAI 2020 Scientific Sessions Virtual Conference and showed favorable outcomes utilizing the device in patients with severe PR.

Ten-Year Results Display Strong Safety and Efficacy Profile for Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve Device

Ten-year follow-up results of the U.S. Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) Trial of the Melody transcatheter pulmonary valve (TPV) were presented today during the SCAI 2020 Scientific Sessions Virtual Conference. Findings showed favorable outcomes for long-term function, safety, and efficacy for congenital patients who underwent Melody valve implantation within an existing dysfunctional right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) conduit or bioprosthetic pulmonary valve.

Icosapent Ethyl Found to Significantly Reduce Revascularizations in Statin Patients

Patients with high lipid levels have an increased risk for ischemic events, despite statin therapy. Findings presented as late-breaking science during the SCAI 2020 Scientific Sessions Virtual Conference revealed that for statin-treated patients with elevated triglycerides and increased cardiovascular risk, icosapent ethyl significantly reduced first and subsequent revascularizations compared with placebo.

Study Examines the Safety of Bioabsorbable Polymer Against Durable Polymer Drug-Eluting Stents in High-Risk Patients Undergoing Percutaneous Coronary Intervention

A novel study sought to reveal whether drug-eluting stents (DES) coated with bioabsorbable polymer (BP) presented a safety advantage without compromising efficacy compared to durable polymer (DP) formulations. Subgroup findings from the TWILIGHT trial were presented today during the SCAI 2020 Scientific Sessions Virtual Conference.

First-Of-Its-Kind-Study Reveals That Eating Prior to Cardiac Catheterization is Non-Inferior to Fasting

Patients undergoing cardiac catheterization are traditionally instructed to follow nothing by mouth, or nil per os (NPO), as there are no current standardized fasting protocols. The single center, randomized study presented today as late-breaking science during the SCAI 2020 Scientific Sessions Virtual Conference aimed to compare safety and clinical outcomes of a non-fasting (NF) strategy as compared to current standard fasting (SF) protocol. The CHOW NOW study is the first in the United States and globally with a large number of randomized patients evaluating the safety of letting them eat prior to a non-emergent cardiac catheterization. This study was performed at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA.

Cutting-edge imaging may provide insight into the functional significance of a stenosis

A novel study aims to evaluate whether optical coherence tomography (OCT) parameters may predict fractional flow reserve (FFR) values and assess if OCT parameters may predict clinical outcome in patients with negative FFR. The study was presented as late-breaking science at the SCAI 2020 Scientific Sessions Virtual Conference.
